Watch Shopify Store Visitors Live (One Script Tag)

Updated

TL;DR

To see live visitors on your Shopify store, paste one script tag into layout/theme.liquid just before </body>, then open your store to watch each shopper's cursor, source and approximate city. It runs on your storefront pages, not on checkout, and does not change how they look.

Using an AI coding agent? Give it this prompt:

Add whoisbrowsing (live visitor view) to this project. Follow https://whoisbrowsing.com/SKILL.md exactly.

Your snippet

<script src="https://live.whoisbrowsing.com/s.js" data-site="YOUR_SITE_ID" defer></script>

Steps

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store, click the three-dot menu on your theme, then Edit code (Shopify: edit theme code).
  2. Open layout/theme.liquid. Press Cmd/Ctrl + P and type the file name if you cannot find it.
  3. Paste the snippet just above </body>.
  4. Save.

Shopify recommends duplicating your theme first as a backup. Shopify also says you can edit theme code only after you have purchased the theme, so a trial of a paid theme must be bought first. Shopify's page states no other plan requirement: check your plan if the Edit code option is missing.

What it covers

Page type Covered?
Home, collection, product, cart, blog Yes, they use theme.liquid
Checkout Controlled by Shopify, not by your theme file

The script runs on your storefront pages; checkout pages are controlled by Shopify, not by your theme file, so a theme edit does not reach them. Shopify's current rules for custom scripts in checkout are not covered here, so treat checkout as not covered.

When whoisbrowsing is not the right tool

It shows people on your site right now. If you need order reports or history, use Shopify's own analytics. What a live view is good for on a store, and what it never captures, is in live visitors for e-commerce stores.

Content-Security-Policy note

If your site sends a Content-Security-Policy header, allow the script and its live connection: script-src https://live.whoisbrowsing.com and connect-src wss://live.whoisbrowsing.com. Most Shopify sites send no such header, so you can usually skip this.

Verify

  1. In whoisbrowsing, click Watch for your site.
  2. Open your site in a Chrome Incognito or Safari private window. Your own normal browser is never counted, so a private window is how you test.
  3. You should see yourself as a coloured cursor on your real page, and one line for you in the side panel.

Each website is separate: www. and the bare domain count as the same website, but localhost and production never mix. If you see nothing, check that the site ID matches the one shown for this site.

If you see nothing on Shopify

  • Did you edit the published theme? Changes to a theme that is not published do not reach your live store until you publish it.
  • Are you testing the live store? Open your store's own domain in a private window, not the theme editor's preview.
  • Is the tag above </body>? Open the page source in the private window and search for live.whoisbrowsing.com.
  • Does the address match? Your myshopify.com address and your custom domain are different websites in whoisbrowsing, so make sure the site you are watching matches the address you opened.

Let your AI agent do it

Add whoisbrowsing (live visitor view) to this project. Follow https://whoisbrowsing.com/SKILL.md exactly.

This prompt works when your site's code lives in a project an agent can edit. On Shopify, where you edit the site in the browser, paste the tag yourself as shown above; an agent can still create the site for you and hand you the tag. See install with an AI agent.
